I’m Victoria Tomkinson,
and I’m a Social Media Editor at Refinery29. I grew up in Michigan, but I’m originally from Liverpool, England. I went to Michigan State University, and have been working at R29 since I graduated. As an Associate Social Editor, I run two of our category Facebook pages, work closely with verticals pitching and packaging content, and work on Pinterest and Twitter. I also manage the creation of our social assets (aka memes!), from creating the content calendar to the final step of posting them.
2017 IS ARGUABLY GOING TO BE A BIG YEAR FOR SOCIAL MEDIA. WITH CURRENT AFFAIRS IN MIND HOW HAVE YOU USED SOCIAL PLATFORMS (OR PLAN TO USE IT) TO IMPACT OTHERS IN A POSITIVE WAY?
I think it’s so important that we use social as a platform to start a conversation, especially with everything being so wild. Sharing important information, tackling the comments as a place to talk with one another, and covering moments that really make a difference are going to be huge!
WHAT IS ONE QUESTION YOU WISH PEOPLE ASKED YOU MORE OFTEN GENERALLY AND WITH REGARD TO YOUR WORK AT R29?
What has you stumped right now? I feel like social is such a collaborative effort, and sometimes you really hit a wall. I work best when I’m with others, and sometimes I just need a hand to break through a wall.
HOW DO YOU THINK CREATIVITY PLAYS A ROLE IN SOME OF THE WORLD’S BIGGER CONVERSATIONS AND WHAT ROLE IS SOCIAL MEDIA, IN GENERAL, IS PLAYING A ROLE IN THIS SHIFT?
I think social media makes it so easy to be exposed to so much creativity, and so many different kinds. It makes it exciting to check what’s going on all the time!
WITH ALL OF THIS TALK OF INSTAGRAM WE ALSO LOVE YOUR PERSONAL INSTAGRAM AND APPROACH TO CURATION! HOW HAS IT INFLUENCED YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
Thank you! It is seriously one of my biggest sources of style inspiration. I always scroll through it when I’m stumped on what to wear, and even have specific go-to’s whose style I particularly love. It also made me want to photograph my outfits more, which is partially why I started doing the #ther29bathroom! It was my resolution last year to take more photos of my outfits, and now it’s one of my go-to shots.
HOW WOULD YOU ADVISE THE NEXT GENERATION OF CREATIVES, CONTENT CREATORS, DREAMERS TO LEAVE AN IMPRINT IN THE WORLD SIMPLY BY DOING WHAT THEY LOVE?
Just that: Do what you love. I think it makes it so much easier to really throw your all into something when you love it!
