Designer Jessica Kim is in the business of designing with longevity in mind. Through her debut contemporary fashion brand Art Dept. the emerging designer hopes to create an assortment of staple pieces that pay homage to a modern take on minimalism – resulting in clothing that is dynamic while truly providing a blank canvas of sartorial opportunity. Speaking more to this idea, we found ourselves curious to learn more about how Jessica’s professional background translated into the inception of this promising brand and her thoughts on the role Los Angeles has played in shaping her vision as a designer. My name is Jessica and I live

in Los Angeles, am married to my best friend Phil, mom to two little rascals and founder of art dept. I value sincerity, humor, hard work and quality time with family, close friends, and my two dogs. My life is a juggling act between being a full-time mom, wife and business woman and I love it!

How would you describe your relationship to design and how would you respectively define “fashion and “style”?

The creative process and design is what feels most natural and it’s definitely an outlet I find a lot of peace in. Fashion and style to me is about accentuating your personality and what feels right for you. Choose fashion that makes you feel happy and comfortable with who you are.

Does Art Dept. take a stance on sustainability and how has being an LA-based brand informed your outlook on sustainable manufacturing? 

In a time of disposable fashion, we believe in creating timeless, investment pieces that will take you through the years. We take a lot of pride in working with ethical and quality factories.

How do you think creativity contributes to some of the world’s bigger conversations and what role is Art Dept. playing in this shift?

Creativity is a necessary outlet– especially in today’s global climate. With political shifts and leadership changes, it’s easy to get caught up and mentally brought down. art dept. is all about complimenting the everyday woman. I understand what it’s like to be a woman on the go and create our lines with that in mind. Designing clothes has always been my creative outlet and I would like to imagine the women that are wearing art dept. are on their own creative mission as well. 

As a lover of fashion and design, what is the most rewarding aspect of sharing your passion with/designing for someone else?

Witnessing my creative intent living in the world is hard to describe. It’s definitely rewarding knowing my designs are making someone happy and confident while complimenting their figure.

What is one question you wish people asked you more often?

I’m usually answering questions about the business side of things – it’d be fun to answer questions about the creative/development process.
