Hey Hey! My name is Larissa May also known as (Larz).

I am a 23-year-old social media strategist, producer, and founder of #HalfTheStory, a global community that encourages individuals to share parts of their lives that exist outside of the standard social media story— Life unfiltered. During my “off time” I enjoy exploring the city, brunching with friends, and playing with pugs (I’m obsessed).

2017 is obviously a huge year for social media, especially with current affairs. Even when taking a back from social, how do you comment on world conversations via social media/use your platform to engage in these topics? How do you personally plan to use Instagram as a vehicle for positivity and inclusion?

Social media and current events have a complicated relationship. Social media is a phenomenal place to learn about world news and make a statement, however, your social media opinions can have real implications. #HalfTheStory encourages positive conversations on social media that drive community. It allows us to set aside our differences about topics and connect on our most human attributes.

What is one question you wish people asked you more often?

How do you find balance? Balance is something I struggle with every day. As an entrepreneur, I’m naturally an “all or nothing person.” I’m trying to implement small self-care rituals and block time off of my calendar to create better habits. It’s never easy to turn off, but I’ve learned the hard way that no is the most important word in my vocabulary.

How do you think creativity plays a role in some of the world’s bigger conversations and how do you believe Half the Story and social media, in general, is playing a role in this?

Creativity is the most powerful way to bring unconventional topics to the center of conversation in mass media. #HalfTheStory paves the way for these discussions through a creative format, editorial series, and a highly supportive community. I truly believe that art and storytelling are two of the most effective forms of communication and the future of our society will rely on this.

What has been the most unexpected discovery you’ve made about yourself, your style, and your work as a result of launching this project?

I have learned that community and empowering others through art and conversation is a common thread through all of my projects. Although social media is digital “proof” for a community, my favorite moments are the IRL experiences like coffee dates and community events. Social media is the first spark.

How would you advise the next generation of creatives, content creators, and dreamers to leave an imprint in the world simply by doing what they love?

The idea that keeps you up at night is the one you should fight for. Take a small step every day that will take you closer to your goal. In due time, the hard work will begin to unfold.
