City Guide: A Weekend in Upstate New York

Upstate New York has become creative hub

for many city dwellers who are looking to escape the stress of their fast-paced life, even if only for a weekend. After receiving ongoing recommendations from members of our community (and after attending our interviewee Alisa Richter’s wedding in Hudson!) we were inspired to curate an illustrative guide of the best and most-celebrated local businesses that are worth checking out. From Germantown to Phoenicia discover the shortlist below featuring immersive illustrations created by contributor Lily Qian for The Style Line.

Phoenicia Diner

ADDRESS: 5681 NY-28, Phoenicia, NY 12464

Perhaps best known for its Instagram fame and charmingly nostalgic atmosphere we have to say that the Phoenicia Diner experience certainly lives up to the hype. The bustling diner in the middle of small-town Phoenicia, New York caters to local customers and first-time goers alike. The food was warm (and absolutely delicious – with dangerous portion sizes we might add!) and the environment was welcoming. Coupling this with a fresh breath of Fall air (and swoon-worthy foliage) there’s nothing quite like an afternoon stroll after a satisfying brunch.

Hawkins New York

ADDRESS: 339 Warren St. Hudson, NY 12534

Hudson’s local shopping community caters heavily to those looking for antique, sustainable and locally-made goods. There is also a huge market for beautiful interior pieces and home objects. Enter Hawkins New York, a design store that celebrates craftsmanship without compromising a sleek, modern aesthetic. This store is one of the many inspiring shopping destinations you’ll find while wandering down Warren St.

Moto Coffee Machine

ADDRESS: 357 Warren St, Hudson, NY 12534

In need of a caffeine fix? From fashion to food, luckily Warren St. has all of its bases covered and that’s where Moto Coffee Machine comes in. Live like the locals do by stopping in for a quick break to enjoy a hot cup of coffee and tasty snack. This is also a great spot for people watching!

ADDRESS: 2 Church Ave, Germantown, NY 12526

Drawing from the ambiance of the New York City food scene (the owners have worked at some of the city’s most coveted restaurants including Marlow & Sons), Gaskins is the perfect, and completely unexpected, completion to a weekend jaunt. From our one-and-only dinnertime experience (try the Garganelli), we would highly recommend adding this to your list of eateries if you find yourself in Germantown.
